Dr. Masoud Akbarzadeh, Associate Professor of Architecture at Penn, leads a project to harness ocean wave energy, an untapped resource that could supply 10% of global electricity. Working with Dr. Shu Yang, Chair of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn, and Dr. Reza Alam, Professor of Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, the team is developing artificial reef structures inspired by natural reefs. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the project aims to utilize recycled materials for 3D printing artificial reefs that will capture wave energy while protecting coastlines.
